Family movies is a fairly vague way of describing the types of films family units will congregate around either at home or at the movie theater. The reason that it may be hard to peg down what exactly entails a family movie is because every family is different. One family’s desire to watch a rollicking, old-school musical may not gel with another family’s need to watch a futuristic look at a dystopian world run by cyborgs.
Still, even with such different ideas about what types of family movies people like, it can be said that there are some general truths to what a family movie usually has to offer. For starters, it usually means that the movie carries a MPAA rating that indicates ages appropriate to watch said film. Family films also tend to have life lessons taught by way of life experiences but ultimately having a happy ending. There is also content in the film that appeals to all ages.
Over time, the idea of a family movie has usually meant that an animated film is all that is available, but the truth is that there are a number of great movies that are fun for everyone in the family.
In fact, here are five family movies you should watch but for some reason you haven’t:
School of Rock – What happens when a down-on-his-luck musician cons his way into being a substitute music teacher? Only one of the best family films in the last twenty years. You know you loved Jack Black as the voice of Po the panda, so it’s worth your time checking out this great film.
The Sandlot – Set in the early 1960s, this classic combines America’s love of baseball with a rag-tag bunch of neighborhood kids who want to do nothing else except play ball. A great soundtrack, hilarious shenanigans, and a heartfelt lesson about making new friends & how life changes make this a “must-watch” for any family.
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey – What do a cat, two dogs, and the wild frontier have in common? Not much really, but their combined efforts helped create one of the longer-lasting legacies of early 1990s movies that are now looked back on with fondness.
Rookie of the Year – Kids dream of playing professional sports, but reality usually sets in & reminds them how tough it can be to “make it”. This movie, however, puts a twist on this dream & makes it a reality by having the lead character acquire super-human abilities that eventually lead to signing a pitching contract with the Chicago Cubs. There are plenty of laughs & a lot of heart.
Cool Runnings – When the odds are stocked against you & everyone expects you to fail, the only thing you can do is persevere. A fictionalized take on the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team competing in the 1988 Winter Olympics, this movie is a little hokey, but it does have some great laughs & teaches a powerful lesson about finishing what you started.
No matter how you define what family movies mean to you & your loved ones, it certainly will do you some good to get the gang together every once in a while to watch a movie.
